Job Title: Intern / Resident Consultant - External Relations and Advocacy

Responsible to: Senior Manager, External Relations and Advocacy

Job Purpose: The Intern / Resident Consultant - External Relations and Advocacy will support the External Relations and Advocacy Division in successfully implementing its goals. 

He/she is in cooperation with the Senior Manager and Communications Advisor responsible for the development and the implementation of one or several specific advocacy areas or projects

Key Tasks

  • Support the development and implementation of ERAs projects and events
  • Observe and analyse global and regional political processes in close cooperation with ERA team members and support the implementation of a communication strategy targeting key decision makers at different levels to effect desirable change
  • In agreement with the supervisor representing IPPFAR towards external stakeholders in the context of the areas of responsibility, like being member of working groups etc
  • Support the External Relations and Advocacy Team in preparing strategic recommendations to advance IPPFAR work
  • Support the External Relations Team in preparing regular reports, schedules and speeches according to IPPFAR guidelines and procedures
  • To support and guide on any relevant strategic opportunity and direction that may contribute to improve IPPFAR visibility and leadership.
  • To support in documentation, analysis and dissemination of internal and external information and best practices and coordinate the development of publicity materials online and in printed formats t support IPPF AR activities
  • Undertake any other duties that might be assigned his/her supervisor

Education & Qualifications

  • Relevant degree with experience in Documentation, Communications and/or Public Relations  

Professional Experience

  • Progressive working experience in Public Health and/or Reproductive Health

Skills

  • Fully conversant with use of new technology for communications and outreach, including the web and multimedia tools
  • Interpersonal and management skills
  • Fluency in English. Knowledge of French and Portuguese is an added advantage
  • Excellent communication (spoken and written) skills,

Organizational context

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Regional Office in Nairobi supports Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies in 15 countries across East Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands. 

The East Africa and Indian Ocean Islands (EAIOI) regional office is sharing premises with the IFRC Africa Zone office.

The Regional office operations unit supports national societies in disaster response. 


The current crisis in South Sudan has countries for a large part of the region and the regional office is active in responding to this disaster as well as other emergencies such as flooding, drought, mudslides, disease outbreaks, etc. across the region. 

The regional operations unit currently consists of a Regional Operation Coordinator and two regional Disaster Management Delegate. 

The Operations Unit works closely with the IFRC regional office technical teams within Watsan, Health, Disaster Risk Reduction and Disaster Preparedness, Food security and Beneficiary Communications as well as with the IFRC Africa Zone Disaster Management Unit.

Strategy 2020 of the International Federation of Red Cross Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) places emphasis on developing a culture of active engagement with, and transparent accountability to the communities that we serve and work with. 

One approach towards improving our effectiveness and building greater accountability in programme delivery is to develop a more systematic and coordinated approach towards communicating with ‘at-risk’ and ‘disaster-affected’ communities.

Internship Purpose

 The role of the operational support intern is to provide support to the emergency operations unit at the IFRC Regional Office in Nairobi.

The intern will support the coordination of timely, efficient and effective IFRC support to National Societies that are dealing with the impact of the population movement within and from South Sudan, as well as other sudden and slow onset disasters and crises events.
 
The intern will report on a day to day basis to the IFRC Regional Operations Coordinator. A mid-term evaluation will be held between the intern and the Regional Ops Manager. 

Based on the performance and the interests of the intern the case-load of tasks and responsibilities will be re-assessed during the mid-term evaluation

Internship duties and responsibilities
  • Assist the Operations Unit with daily support to emergency operations.
  • Collect data and information from emergency response operations and provide a regional overview by the use of tool already existing, and by supporting the development of new management and planning tools.
  • Assist with planning and development of DREF and Emergency appeals processes
  • Support monitoring of emergency operations through use of IFRC tools
  • Support the development of a functional information management system in support of operations management
  • Assist with formulation of relevant operational reports including report writing
  • Support with the rapid deployment of delegates, RDRT, FACT or ERU’s
  • Support to administrative and financial management functions of the Operation unit

TechnoServe, Inc. is an international nonprofit development organization founded in 1968. Its mission is to work with enterprising people in the developing world to build competitive farms, businesses and industries.
 

Primary Project Purpose and Background Information

TechnoServe has forged a partnership with Partners in Food Solutions (PFS) to improve the capacity of African based food processing companies. 

PFS is an umbrella organization that represents General Mills, Cargill, DSM and BÃœhler, some of the world’s leading food processing companies and utilizes volunteers and facilities from those organizations to transfer capacity building knowledge and technology to African food processors. 

The goal of the program is to help African based food companies become competitive suppliers of finished food products that meet local and regional quality standards, including products needed by vulnerable populations via food aid markets. 

A key component of strengthening local competitiveness is learning from successes and failures that are encountered in the process of project implementation.
 
The internship will focus on particular projects/business case and collect detailed information on their implementation and results and at the end come up with a case study with details on why the project/business case succeeded or failed. 

This case study will be used in future design and implementation of such projects and will ensure that successes are adopted and issues that could contribute to failure are avoided.
 
Scope: The intern will work in partnership with program staff (and in collaboration with remote support / input from PFS in the US) on an ongoing project on full time basis to enable him/her capture the finer details of the project’s implementation.

The internship will take approximately 6 months and at the end of the internship, the intern is expected to have gathered enough data and information to:
  1. Document the entire project implementation
  2. Document key success factors
  3. Point out issues that would lead to failure
  4. Prepare a comprehensive case study that can be used for future learning purposes

Annex 1: Business Case Study
 
Topic: “Raising Business Finance by Small Growing Businesses (SGBs) processing food in Kenya: A case study of Mwailu Ltd
 
Introduction: This case study should provide an analysis and evaluation on accessibility of finance by food processors. This will be done by assessing the current and prospective profitability, liquidity and financial stability and any other factors that affects the A2F of Mwailu Ltd. Methods of analysis should include trend, horizontal and vertical analyses as well as ratios such as Debt, Current and Quick ratios. 

Other calculations should be rates of return on any potential shareholders’ Equity and Total Assets and earnings per share to name a few.

Mwailu Ltd. was established in 1981. Currently has 15 employees, and supports 2000 small holder farmers by leveraging on USAID support for grain aggregation. Their main business has been aggregation and sale of whole grain to processors. 

The business has been working on initiating a grain processing unit. In the process they have engaged different financiers including Equity bank and Root Capital with no much success in the funding for the processing unit. 

The company has accessed funding by Equity bank for farm machinery purchase.

The case study is designed to be carried out as a MBA/MSC (Finance) project by the selected student. 

The student will work out the modalities of approval and any suggested modification by their supervisors retaining the area of interests for the SAFE program. 

The findings of the case study will be co-owned by the student and the SAFE program for the purpose of use for any purpose the program will deem right.

Mara Online seeks to empower young people in Africa by providing a complementary suite of technology products tailored to their needs. One of these products is Mara Mentor, a Mara Foundation initiative that is a social network with a purpose – creating a social impact. 

Mara Online is seeking to build a technology ecosystem to tap into Africa communications.

There are more than 650 million mobile phone subscribers and a large population of youth looking for new ways to communicate, faster and cheaper.
 

About the position

We are looking for a tech savvy individual who is ready and willing to lead, coordinate, promote, and execute unique events, forums & initiatives that creatively integrate the Mara Mentor platform into various universities in Kenya. 

The Mara Foundation is executing an exciting Mara Mentor recruitment drive in 10 top tier campuses across Nairobi and major cities in Kenya to help showcase how Mara Mentor is revolutionising the SME landscape in Kenya.

The successful candidate will help develop and implement campus events that facilitate personalised user experiences with the Mara Mentor app.

Qualifications, skills and requirements
 
The successful candidate should ideally:
  • Be well spoken, congenial, articulate and comfortable talking to new people and engaging them in genuine conversations and experiences.
  • Be active on a variety of social media channels preferably having a large social media following and owns a laptop
  • Have recently graduated from campus preferably with qualifications in Business Studies, Marketing, Public Relations or Education.
  • Be aware of the trends in small and medium enterprise development in Kenya
  • Have the ability to coordinate an on-the-ground team (Mara Ambassadors) that’ll be responsible for maintaining consistent visibility of the Foundation's presence on campus via print marketing collateral, ie: flyers and posters.
  • Collate feedback from the Mara Ambassadors in the form of data sheets that will be used to analyze campaign effectiveness and outreach
  • Be able to maintain a flexible schedule and be willing to work evenings and weekends based on potential activations and events
  • Have previous event planning experience, the capacity to curate great ideas and the determination and connections to make awesome events happen
  • Have in mind that downloading the app and signing up is not enough. We want students using the app together, sharing their experiences, interact & engage with other users, learn and have fun! This can ideally happen in campus events, student club sessions, hang-outs, or even study-sessions. There are a myriad of possibilities while making the entire user experience fun and engaging.
  • Execute any other task that may be assigned to you.
