Position profile

CNHR 2014 Research Internships

Raising the profile of research for health among young Kenyans


The Fifth National Call for Research Internships - 2014

The Consortium for National Health Research (CNHR) is a Kenyan non-governmental organization whose mission is to contribute to the strengthening of national research for health in Kenya. 

This is done by providing support for multidisciplinary research to individuals and institutions, and engaging policy makers in formulation of health research policies that are evidence based. 

The Consortium also contributes to the building of networks and communities in research for health. 

The Research Internship Programme CNHR sponsors an annual research internship exposure programme that enables young graduates to make informed choices of pursuing a life-long careers in research. 

Through this Programme, CNHR will offer ten competitive scholarships for a maximum period of six months (October 2014-April 2015). 

Successful interns will benefit from close mentorship and supervision by senior researchers in various institutions across the country. 

Some of the selected interns will have hands-on experience in multidisciplinary settings; others will
work in laboratory/field conditions and be exposed to modern approaches of research using sophisticated diagnostic or analytical equipment, health systems research environment etc.

At the end of the internship period, exceptionally performing candidates may be considered, through a competitive selection process, for further training scholarships at Masters and Post-Doctoral levels under CNHR’s research capacity strengthening and training programme.

Applicants invited from medical, biomedical science and social science disciplines: Recent first degree graduates from both public and private universities are eligible. 

In addition, recently qualified graduate doctors, dentists, pharmacists, nurses, biomedical, social sciences, who have an interest in developing a career in research for health, are also encouraged to apply.

Thematic Focus of the Competitive Essay

The new constitutional dispensation in Kenya has introduced a County focus for development. Article 43 of the Constitution provides for the right to the highest attainable standard of health.

Numerous challenges are being faced in the realization of health care delivery to the newly established counties. In response to this very topical subject, applicants are required to write an
essay of not more than 1200 words on ‘Resolving challenges of devolving healthcare delivery to ensure reasonable access and equitable health services in all parts of the Republic. 

In developing a convincing position, applicants are encouraged to acquaint themselves of the provisions of the Kenyan Constitution (2010), the Vision 2030, as well as numerous government policies (both National and County) and strategies for the health sector.

Eligibility

The successful interns must satisfy the following criteria:
  • Be Kenyan citizens;
  • Be recent (past three years) first degree graduate from a recognized university qualified in a medical/biomedical or social sciences discipline with a minimum of an upper second (or credit for non-classified first degrees);
  • Have no previous health research internship experience for a period greater than 3 months;
  • Be currently unemployed; and
  • Applicants from medical and allied health professional (medical doctors, dentists, pharmacy, nurses etc) should have completed their respective professional internship

Social Venture Customer Development Internship - Nairobi

Program / Department Summary 

The Social Venture Team has three phases (assess, prove and scale) for ideas that receive grant funding from the Social Venture Fund and can become a sustainable social business. 

Each phase must meet certain criteria to be eligible for the next phase with the ultimate aim of spinning the business off on its own as a successful social business. 

The team is in the early stages of the assess phase testing a youth employment social enterprise of an online and mobile marketplace for short term and repetitive jobs. 

The aim of this marketplace is expand the networks of youth to allow youth to become more productive and hire additional staff to meet growing needs as well as stimulate job creation for new services to capture latent demand by the growing lower to middle class. 

This business functions both via mobile and web, leveraging SMS and mobile payments to link youth to individual employers for specific jobs followed up by individual reviews. 

You will be a part of a cross-functional team working on new products development, in a startup-like environment, following Lean Startup methodology. 

You’ll bridge technical and business worlds as you participate in the design of new products using rapid, customer-focused iterations. You will also take part in brainstorming, evaluation and development of ideas gathered through internal company innovation pipeline.

The intern(s) will support and participate in the work of the social business. 

Areas of focus may include: 

1. Supporting program in recruiting customers and validating profiles.

Projects Engineer Trainee


Roles
  • Supervision of civil and structural works
  • Liaison with Project Manager  to ensure that work is accurately and properly done on site
  • Monitoring and reviewing progress and performance of projects to meet plan objects
  • Assist the Projects Manager in monitoring and supervising subcontractors to ensure the adhere to the set work guidelines
  • Assist in measuring and valuation of works done
  • Work with consultants to ensure that works are delivered as per clients expectations
  • Assist the Projects Manager in filling in bills of quantities and specifications for engineering works
  • Ensuring delivery of exceptional customer experience by handling queries at the project sites
  • Assist the company in monitoring use of company resources at project sites.

Entry Requirements

  • Fresh graduate or awaiting graduation from a reputable institution
  • MUST have studied Bachelors Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering
  • Excellent academic performance
  • Exposure to IT and design and engineering software such as Autocad will be an asset
  • Background in steel, wood, concrete and masonry works will be an asset
Salary: Gross Ksh 40,000

Skye Planners Marketing Intern

Skye Planners Limited is a professional corporate event management company incorporated in Kenya. 

We are looking for an energetic, presentable, outgoing and self-driven Marketing Intern to join the team.
 
Location: Nairobi, Kenya
 

Duties

  • Manage and update all social media platforms for the company and related ventures
  • Assist in writing effective marketing materials including proposals, reports, press releases, presentations  and undertake full quality assurance to ensure that they conform to our company or client’s standards and will promote the image and objectives of the organization
  • Assist in identifying potential clients and secure meetings
  • Proactively respond to client’s requests or enquiries and resolve complaints problems independently with appropriate management guidance.
  • The intern will learn and assist in conception, overall design and co-ordination of events
  • Attends and contributes ideas to event planning meetings
  • Assist in maintaining and updating database for service providers and clients
  • Assist in designing promotional materials
  • Undertake any other duties assigned by the supervisor

Education, Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor of Commerce Degree in Marketing or Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication or any other related field
  • Diploma in Graphic Design will be an added advantage
  • Conceptual and analytical skills and have an eye for detail
  • Good organizational skills
  • Passionate, punctual and proactive individual
  • Computer proficiency
  • Team player and excellent communication skills
Internship is for a period of 6 months.
